Following the hugely successful launch of The Ash’s last year, it was The Godber Foundation’s privilege to host the 2018 edition at Cherry Burton CC on Sunday 19th August 2018.
The competition saw nine teams, comprised of varying ages and abilities, take to the field, watched on by family and friends. Games were played in a brilliant spirit throughout the day and the competition saw plenty of drama.
In Group A, returning 2017 Ash’s winners Godber’s All Stars led the way, with high quality cricket, winning all 3 of their matches. The remaining sides in the group competed in incredibly close matches, however it was Godber’s Old Boys who narrowly edged Cherry Burton 2nd XI in a winner takes all final group match, helped largely by some huge hitting by Stew Scott.
Group B saw Fine Legs, led by the powerful Paul Ellis take top spot, but it was the runners-up that stole the headlines as The Godber Foundation Academy produced some scintillating cricket to progress to the semi-finals. To put it in perspective, excluding TGF coaches David and Jamie, the remaining members of the team were aged from 7-14, many playing their first ever competitive cricket. The performances of all of the team were testament to their hard work at the Saturday morning coaching sessions, however a special mention must go to 9 year old Dan Sutcliffe who was awarded Player of the Tournament due to some huge six hitting.
The semi-finals saw Fine Legs progress against Godber’s Old Boys and The Godber Foundation Academy fall just short of a challenging total set by Godber’s All Stars.
The final was played in front of a bumper crowd, with the vast majority of the teams and supporters staying following their elimination. Fine Legs had displayed some powerful batting throughout the day, but the quality of Godber’s All Stars shone through with some exceptional bowling restricting Fine Legs to their lowest total of the day. Godber’s All Stars then chased the total to seal a second consecutive victory and round of a brilliant day of cricket.
Once again, huge thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to a fantastic day. A special mention to those who helped with the running of the day, particularly David Butt who’s hard work ensured the day ran smoothly.
